Yorkshire sandstone, or York stone, is a particular type of sandstone that’s quarried in Yorkshire. If you’re looking for a natural, rugged aesthetic, this is a great option, and it’s hard-wearing and durable too, meaning that its longevity is assured.
York stone is made up of quartz, mica feldspar, clay and iron oxides, a unique mixture of materials that gives it a slaty cleavage. Yorkshire sandstone tends to be a yellowy-brown colour, but you also might find grey, too. In either case, you will find that the stone gets darker as it weathers.
It is more textured and more granular than other stones so it tends to age more quickly though it does so in a very natural way, taking on and blending with the environment.
It is a very traditional stone for memorials, used in churchyards throughout England for centuries.
Because it is more granular lettering needs to be bolder, it lends itself to simpler, bolder san serif letterforms.
